Hieronymus Bosch’s painting, The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things, has been the inspiration for Catholic Church meditations for centuries. Parishioners have been asked to meditate on the Four Last Things – Death, Judgment, Hell and Glory/Heaven. In Lisa Tierney-Keogh’s powerful FOUR LAST THINGS, Jane (Elizabeth A. Davis) does just that as she struggles with a life where solitude = dread. While her country dwelling creates a feeling of hopelessness, her father (Victor Verhaeghe) considers his farm his solace making him an unlikely confidant. Her one faithful companion offering unconditional love (Justin Hagan) can’t speak so Jane must face her demons alone.

FOUR LAST THINGS is a forceful rendition of the tribulations of life and the convoluted path to peace we all face at one time or another. Stellar performances by Davis, Hagan, and Verhaeghe, all monologues, portray the difficulties from different perspectives and emphasize the interconnectedness between and beyond the three. We will all probably contemplate the Four Last Things at some point during our lives; how we handle them makes all the difference.
