In a world where bullying seems to be the favored manner of managing
and humans are becoming increasingly less essential, Jon Fosse’s NIGHT
SINGS ITS SONG comes along to remind us of the value and fragility of
fellow humans. A woman (Susan Lynskey) badgers her husband (Kyle
Cameron) who silently accepts the criticism until he finds a way to
express his paranoia and depression as a defense. Both characters are difficult
to love, and when you meet the fraternal parents (Steven Rattazzi
and Jenny Allen), you easily understand why.
Communication, understanding, and compassion were not skills passed on to the
child. Who can break this pattern of borderline cruelty, dissatisfaction, and
disparagement? Could it be the oh-so-different Baste (Ken King)
who appears to give the woman what she wants? Or is it a case of be careful what
you ask for?
NIGHT SINGS ITS SONGS is a cacophony of emotions, reactions, passions, and disappointments, with survival being the goal and winning being the bonus. Kinda like humanity itself. Definitely worth seeing.
