What do you do when a system is stacked against you? When life happens to you, not for you? When breaks are few and far between? If you are Dahlak Brathwaite, you get together a talented group of singers, rappers, and dancers to tell the story. His TRY/STEP/TRIP is a brilliant concoction of autobiographical memories and experiences. There are progressions – take for example his role models. At age 13, Detroit Red was the guy for young Black men to emulate. That later moved on to Malcolm Little who realized that a life in prison was not the way to go and eventually to Malcolm X and a life of service. Options are often limited, so you do the best with what you are given. There are so many harsh realities made lighter by clever rap and dialogue and ensemble choreography by Toran Moore that includes ingenious uses of chairs. It’s a story of survival, courage, and resilience. In spite of the skewed odds, there are triumphs, and TRY/STEP/TRIP is definitely one of them!
