There’s tension building in the office of therapist Loyd (Peter Friedman). It probably started when Jane (Sydney Lemmon) brought a gun to the session. The music (Devonte Hynes) and the lighting (Mextly Couzin) do nothing to ease the tension; in fact, they are designed to raise the stress levels in Max Wolf Friedlich’s JOB. And they succeed. We journey through the mind of Jane as she reveals some of the ungodly things she has witnessed. Gruesome as they might be, the good heartedness and sarcastic humor of Loyd make it tolerable…until the tables start turning.
JOB is a brilliant portrayal of how fragile a mind can be and how easily it can take an unexpected turn. The characters are complex and compelling, and the acting is superb. The audience goes along for the ride out of curiosity of what will happen next and because director Devonte Hynes makes them a part of the drama. Once you are in your seat, you experience the feeling of being captive just like Loyd. If you leave, no re-entry be allowed. This play epitomizes angst and anxiety.
