The British Are Coming!

LIFEGAME
Created by KEITH JOHNSTONE
Artistic Direction by PHELIM McDERMOTT, LEE SIMPSON and JULIAN CROUCH
Now Playing at the Jane Street Theatre (113 Jane Street).
Performed by Improbable Theatre & Guests.
Conceived by this talented theater company as what is best described as an improvisational
adaptation of "This is your Life," LIFEGAME, plays as a rather controlled variety of
unscripted theater. The essential "plot" involves interviews with The Guest, and spontaneous
re-enactments of moments from that person's life. The concept behind the piece, which
guarantees a unique show at every performance, is a test of the guest as much as of the
Improbables.
The tone and success of any individual performance is certainly gauged by the demeanor and
expressiveness of The Guest. I was fortunate enough to attend the September 26, 2000
version, which featured Nancy Rosenthal, a woman who herself could have been part of the
improv group. Great guest aside, this is a perceivably skilled group of individuals.
Aside from what goes on onstage, credit must be given to the lighting and sound technicians,
who were required to respond to spur of the mom'ent, and often subtle, cues from the stage.
Here too, the methodology is wholly interactive.
Decidedly noteworthy, and almost guaranteed to be a great deal of fun, LIFEGAME is an
event to behold.
